Machines. Writer/director Mike Rianda’s function debut (he and co-writer/director
Jeff Rowe designed their bones on the excellently spooky,
silly present Gravity Falls) is equal parts absurd, endearing and
terrifying. She, along with loosened neckties and
whirring fans, gives the movie its supposed temperature
and gravity so that Boseman and the rest of her band customers can zip about like fireflies ambling in the summer months heat.
With tragic serendipity, Boseman leaves us a reward: he is on hearth.
Williams and co-author Nell Benjamin promptly fall
us into the Inevitable’s quest to take out
Crow’s toothy and horned Red Whale, dubbed the Red Bluster,
with total assurance that there is no time like maritime.
The first movie from longtime Disney story staple Chris Williams immediately after leaving the House of Mouse for Netflix, The Sea Beast is, to paraphrase Jared
Harris’ Ahab-like Captain Crow, all piss and vinegar.
The Sea Beast deftly hones this historic human fear into
a sharpened spear idea, striking at ignorance. That the
film even alludes to the phrase, and drops a few other
flippantly-salted strains you may expect
from some seasoned sea pet dogs, is indicative of
its separation from the sanitized juggernaut.
Its swashbuckling experience navigates a sea filled with substantial
critters positive to whet kids’ appetites for piracy, Godzilla films and interesting
animation.
